Raymond Kurzweil

(미국 컴퓨터과학자 1948~ )

Raymond Kurzweil 은 광학문자인식 (Optical Character Recognition), 음성인식 (Speech Recognition), 음성합성 (Speech Systhesis, text to speech), electronic musical keyboards 분야를 개척했다. 또한 health, 인공지능 (Artificial Intelligence), transhumanism, 기술통합 (technological singularity, 인체와 기계의 단일화) 에 관한 여러권의 저자이기도 한다.

Kurzweil 은 뉴욕에서 성장했으며 유년시절에 과학 소설 (Science Fiction) 에 탐닉하였다. 12 세에 그만의 최초의 컴퓨터 (Computer) 를 프로그램했다. 프로그래밍에 빠져든 직후에는 TV 쇼 " I've Got a Secret" 에 출연하여 그가 발명해낸 컴퓨터로 실제로 연주하고 작곡하는 classical piano piece 를 선보였다. 1968 년에는 200 여개의 질문항목에 대답함으로써 고등학생이 자기가 갈수있는 대학을 전망해주는 프로그램을 만들어 팔기도 했다. 1970 년에 MIT 에서 컴퓨터과학으로 학사학위를 받았다.

Kurzweil 은 omni-font optical character recognition, 맹인을 위한 print-to-speech reading machine, CCD flatbed scanner, text-to-speech synthesizer, 그랜드피아노와 다른 오케스트라 도구들을 재생할수 있는 music synthesizer, 상업용으로 판매된 large-vocabulary speech recognition 등을 모두 최초로 만들었다.

또한 그는 OCR, music synthesis, speech recognition, reading technology, virtual reality, financial investment, medical simulation, cybernetic art 등에 관한 모두 9 개의 회사를 설립해왔다.

그는 2002 년에 미국 특허청에서 설립한 National Inventors Hall of Fame 회원이 되었다. 미국의 발명분야의 가장 큰 상인 Lemelson-MIT Prize 을 받았고, 1999 년에는 기술분야의 국가적 최고영예인 National Medal of Technology 를 받았다.

그는 20 여개의 다른 상들을 수상하였는데 그중에는 Dickson Prize (1994, Carnegie Mellon University's top science prize), Engineer of the Year from Design News, Inventor of the Year from MIT in 1998, Association of American Publishers' award (Most Outstanding Computer Science Book, 1990), Grace Murray Hopper Award (Association for Computing Machinery) 등등이 있다. 그는 7 개의 명예박사학위를 받고 3 명의 대통령으로부터 상을 받았다.

그의 musical keyboards 회사인 Kurzweil Music Systems 에서는 가장 섬세하고 실제같은 (따라서 비싼) synthesized-sound creation instruments 를 생산하고 있다. 그는 영화 S1m0ne 의 줄거리에 영향을 받아서 그 자신의 여성 분신 (female alter ego) 인 "Ramona" 를 만들었다. 2005 년에 Bill Gates 는 Kurzweil 을 가리켜 "인공지능의 미래를 가장 잘 예측한 인물" 로 언급하였다. ............
